![]() Pack 31 will be taking our fall hike in Callahan State Forest on November 8, 2015. We’ll be meeting at the North Entrance at 8:30 am for an 8:45 briefing and a hard start at 9:00 am. The hike should take about 90 minutes and we expect to be wrapped up by 11:00 am at the latest. We will be stopping for a break so bring a nutritious snack. Scouts should pack a day-pack with the Cub Scout Six Essentials for Going Outdoors:
Callahan State Park is a 820-acre state-owned, public recreation area located in the town of Framingham and the city of Marlborough, Massachusetts. Callahan has seven miles of marked trails and is used for activities including fishing, hiking, horseback riding (horses not provided) and cross-country skiing. Within the park are nearly 100 acres of open fields. A trail map can be found here. The park is home to a wide variety of trees both coniferous and deciduous. Wildlife spotted at Callahan State Park include snapping turtles, spotted turtles, red bellied turtles, white tail deer, garter and water snakes, tree frogs, most New England frog and toad varieties, minks, fisher cat, red fox, coyote, largemouth bass at Eagle Pond, various common trout, pumpkin seeds and blue gills, herons, egrets, bobolinks, goldfinches, orioles, red tail hawks, mocking birds, sparrows, swifts, swallows, grackles, cow birds, cat birds, barred owl, other various birds of prey, robins, cardinals, blue jays and other New England birds. Deer flies, ticks, and mosquitoes are common. Garter snakes can be seen basking on the hot dirt paths in spring and summer. PARKING We are parking at the North Entrance of the forest. Follow Broadmeadow St past the Wayside Racket and Swim Club. Follow the road straight at the intersection onto Nourse St. It is the first dirt parking lot on your left. We might have to double park and stack the cars up but we can also park on the paved road.
