Pinewood Derby Jan 30, 2016

The Marlborough City Wide Pinewood Derby is coming soon!  See below for dates and rules.


2016 Awards
Pack 31 will be presenting awards for these categories this year:

  • 1st in Pack
  • 2nd in Pack
  • 3rd in Pack
  • Top Tiger in Pack
  • Fastest car in each Den
  • Most Cub Scout Pride or Patriotic
  • Best Use Of Imagination
  • Most Fuel Efficient
  • Least Like a Car
  • Best in Show
  • Best Paint Job

Thursday, Jan 28, 2016, 6:30-8:00 pm
Weigh-in @ the Hobin house (231 Naugler Ave)
All cars must be dropped off for weigh-in in order to be eligible for racing on Saturday.  Cars for the Friday evening Sibling Race need to be dropped off on Thursday also. Be sure your name and "Pack 31" is written on the bottom of your car!

Sibling Race @ Meehan Hall (119 Washington St, Marlborough)
Please bring your sibling car to the Wednesday weigh-in. Car numbers will be assigned Friday evening - be sure your name and "Pack 31" is written on the bottom of your car! 
Come join us for our annual Sibling Race where any Scout siblings can race their own cars for fun, fame and glory!

Snacks and drinks will be available as a fundraiser.  This is a great family event so bring the grandparents, uncles, cousins, and anyone else who might enjoy the race!

City Wide Races @ Meehan Hall (119 Washington St, Marlborough)
Pack 31's top 3 racers will be racing in the City Wide races at 3pm.  Come cheer on the scouts!
Key Rules for 2016:
Cars in the 2016 competition must have been made for the 2016 race season. Cars or parts of cars such as wheels or axles, from previous years may not be used.  Only the Official Cub Scout Grand Prix Derby Car kit the Pack provided may be used.

Weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces (141.75 grams).  Overall width of car shall not exceed 2 3/4 inches.  Length of car shall not exceed 7 inches.  Height of car shall not exceed 4 inches.  Minimum width between wheels shall be 1 3/4 inches so that the wheels can clear the center guide strip.  Minimum distance between the bottom of the car and the bottom of the wheels shall be 3/8 inch so that the car will clear the center guide strip.  The axles must be placed in the slots provided in the wood blocks. This provides a wheelbase (axle to axle distance) of 4 3/8 inches.

Wheels must be full width as provided in the kit. The width of the wheel that touches the track must be at least 1/4 inch wide and flat. Beveling, tapering, thin sanding, wafering or lathe turning of the wheels is prohibited.  Only dry, powdered lubricant may be used.

Don't forget Bob's Wooden Toys Workshop (@ Trombetta's) if you need help getting your cars built.  They have 50 different patterns, weights, paints, and a scale. Their prices are:  Extra blank blocks $5.00, weights of (2 1/4 oz) $5.00, cut and sand your car $3.00, cut sand and paint your car $7.00.  Use of patterns, hammers, and scale are free.
